How to Handle Persecution #8 | with Daniel Whyte III

TEXT: Matthew 10:16-23: “Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues; And ye shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what ye shall speak. For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you. And the brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved. But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.”

Over the past two weeks, we have been spending time in God’s Word in Matthew chapter 10. We have looked at the six types of persecution that Jesus Christ told his disciples they would face as he sent them out into the world to preach the kingdom of God. Today, I want to draw you attention to this same passage for different reasons.

As they say, there are two sides to every story, and this passage is no different. Yes, Christ gave his disciples and us six forms of persecution that we may have to face, but He also gave His disciples and us ten blessings that we receive because we choose to serve Him despite the high cost of being a follower of Christ. Today, let’s look at the first five blessings of serving Christ in the face of persecution.

1. First, there is a blessing in simply being sent by Christ.
2. The second blessing that we gain is the blessing of being given words by the Holy Spirit.
3. Third, there is the blessing of experiencing God’s fatherly care.
4. Fourth, there is the blessing of salvation at the end of it all.
5. Fifth, there is the blessing of knowing that the Son of Man is coming in judgment and mercy.
