TEXT: John 5:31-39

31 If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

32 There is another that beareth witness of me; and I know that the witness which he witnesseth of me is true.

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare witness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man: but these things I say, that ye might be saved.

35 He was a burning and a shining light: and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not.

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 61.

Andreas J. Köstenberger said, “If God’s word had dwelt in Jesus’ opponents, they would have accepted rather than rejected him… Jesus maintained that zeal in studying Scripture was misguided, for alone it was insufficient for attaining eternal life.”

After speaking of how John the Baptist and the miracles He performed testified to the truth of who He was, Jesus points to His third witness. This witness is none other than God the Father. Jesus says, “The Father himself, which hath sent me, hath borne witness of me.”

In their own lifetime, there were at least three ways in which God the Father had testified of His Son. First, when Jesus was born, the angels of God proclaimed His arrival to the shepherds and they went throughout Bethlehem announcing the good news that Christ, the Savior, had come. No doubt, this did not escape the notice of the Jewish leaders. Perhaps, by this time, however, they had forgotten it or simply disregarded it.

Second, around the same time Jesus was born, a star appeared in the East. (Because of its unusual appearance, some scholars say it was a planet appearing closer than normal to the Earth.) King Herod, who had been told by the Wise Men that the star meant a king was to be born, summoned the Jewish religious leaders and asked them what the sign meant. It was the Jews who, reading from Scripture, told Herod where the Messiah would be born. Surely, they saw then that God was at work.

Then, when Jesus was baptized by John, a voice came out of Heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” Everyone knew that the voice was from God, and the one whom He was speaking of was Jesus Christ. Apparently, the Jewish leaders did not take this voice seriously.

Thus, Jesus tells them, “Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.” The word “hear” in this verse is used in the sense of “obey.” They knew of God’s word regarding the Messiah, but they had not obeyed it or acted on it. The phrase “seen his shape” has a similar interpretation. They saw God working, but they had not paid attention to it or regarded it. They were so blind that they simply ignored it. How many people today, saved and lost, hear God’s word and see God working but don’t allow His word and His work to impact their lives?

Jesus goes on to point out how that God had been testifying to the Jews about the Messiah, not just in recent days, but for centuries past. He says, “Ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye believe not. Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”

The “word” Jesus is talking about is the Old Testament Scriptures, specifically the writings of the prophets. There are over 350 specific prophecies about the Messiah in the Old Testament. The Jews, especially the religious leaders, were avid students of the Scripture. They believed that they could gain hold of eternal life through accurate study of the Bible. However, in spite of all their study, they completely missed the fact that Jesus was fulfilling the Old Testament prophecies right before their eyes. This was the testimony of the Father — the Scriptures speaking of Jesus before He had arrived.

Imagine being on a hiking tour. At the beginning of the tour, you pick up a guide book that tells you about the trail, the different points of interest, and some historical markers. You start walking, but miss the scenery and all the points of interest because you have your nose stuck in the guide book. This is what happened to the Jewish leaders.

Jesus called them on this ignorance. They were searching the Scriptures for eternal life, all the while eternal life was standing right in front of them. They missed this great revelation because they did not have God’s Word in their hearts; to them, the Scriptures were just books of religious information. They didn’t see it as the living word of God and they missed out on the greatest blessing in history.

God is speaking about His Son even today. He is still speaking through His word, whether you are reading it for yourself or hearing it preached. The question is: will you allow yourself to be blinded to the truth of what is being shown to you, or will you seize this opportunity to believe.

If you are ready to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, here is how you can do that today:

1. Accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Ecclesiastes 7:20: “For there is not a just man upon earth that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Romans 3:23 reads: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.” In fact, I am the chief of sinners, so don’t think that you’re alone.

2. Accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

3. Accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” The Bible says in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

4. Accept the fact that you cannot do anything to save yourself! The Bible states in Ephesians 2: 8, 9: “For by grace are ye saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God. Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

5. Accept the fact that God loves you more than you love yourself, and that He wants to save you from hell. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

6. With these facts in mind, please repent of your sins, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and pray and ask Him to come into your heart and save you this very moment. The Bible states in the book of Romans 10:9, 13: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Dear friend, if you are willing to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation, please pray with me this simple prayer: Heavenly Father, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
