TEXT: Matthew 8:28-34

28 And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.

29 And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?

30 And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding.

31 So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine.

32 And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and perished in the waters.

33 And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the possessed of the devils.

34 And, behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus: and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

Jesus’ confrontation with the Gadarene demoniacs — or, more correctly, the demons possessing the Gadarene men — show us important contrasts between the work of God and the work of the devil. We have seen how demon possession or demonic influence always leads to spiritual death and very often leads to physical death. Demonic influence is also the root of most division and conflict in the world. Satan is the divider-in-chief, and whenever he can influence one person or one group of people to oppose another, he will. Thus, the Gadarene men in this passage had been driven from their families and communities and were abiding in a graveyard.

The demons’ conversation with Jesus reveals other important workings of the demonic realm: such as the fact that the devil’s minions are restless. They agitate and are agitators. Peace, rest, and calm are foreign concepts in the kingdom of darkness. That is why the devils “beseech” (or beg) Jesus to send them into a herd of swine feeding “a good way off.” They cannot fathom the thought of being cast into the ether; they long for a physical form to possess, consume, and control. In contrast, God honors the free will of His creation and only fills those who willingly come to Him with His Spirit. He forces no man into salvation or His service. But, if he can, the devil will take and use without regard to the well-being of the person.

The Church of Satan, which pops up in the news every month or so nowadays, claims that one of its core tenets is the embracing of the spirit of rebellion, freedom, and rejection of authority. Basically, they want what the Book of Judges describes as every man doing what is right in his own eyes. Ironically, however, it is God’s people who are truly free because they have willingly submitted to God. Those under the influence of the devil are in bondage because the devil does not care about the effects of sin on the person. He only wants to use the person to further his own dark ends.

We must also note that demons have no power except that which they are allowed. The demons “besought” or begged Jesus to send them into the pigs; they could not do even this on their own. This harkens back to Satan who had to get permission from God to afflict Job. Tertullian remarked, “If a legion of devils had not power over a herd of hogs, how much less have they over Christ’s flock of sheep.” This truth is important to remember when we face off against Satan. If we are in Christ, the devil has no power over us except that which we allow. We give the devil opportunity to influence our lives through sin, lack of prayer, lack of Bible reading, lack of church attendance, and fellowshiping too often with those who remain in the world. The Bible would not instruct us to resist the devil if he could not be resisted. The devil’s power has always been limited and he is subject to the power of God which resides in each and every one of us.

Maltie D. Babcock wrote:

This is my Father’s world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas–
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world:
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world:
He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father’s world:
O let me ne’er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world:
Why should my heart be sad?
The Lord is King: let the heavens ring!
God reigns; let earth be glad!

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
