Jesus Christ said, “It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer.”

How Not to Walk, Part 8 (Revive the Family, Revive the Church, Awaken the Nation, O Lord #254)

A series of homilies on Ephesians.

A homily is “a short talk on a religious or moral topic; a usually sho[t sermon; a lecture or discourse on or of a biblical theme.”

I am sharing a verse-by-verse series of short messages on Ephesians (as well as other passages of Scripture) specifically targeted at reviving families and encouraging and exhorting husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and children to do what God has commanded them to do, for if the church is to be revived and the country is to be awakened, the family must be revived first.

TEXT: Ephesians 4:23-25:

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Andrew Bonar said, “We must continue in prayer if we are to get an outpouring of the Spirit. Christ says there are some things we shall not get, unless we pray and fast. We must control the flesh and abstain from whatever hinders direct fellowship with God.”

Leonard Ravenhill said, “This moment can be a turning point in your life if you not only come to the cross, but get on it! Get rid of your pettiness and your jealousy. Get rid of your erratic living that you get when you come to a conference and you’re down in a valley the next week. That shouldn’t happen if Christ is indwelling you. He’s the same yesterday, today, and forever. He keeps me in peace; He keeps me in joy; He keeps me in power.”

In their book, The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever, Elmer Towns and Douglas Porter share with us: “Regarding the Azusa Street Revival, the Apostolic Faith reported: ‘The Pentecost has crossed the water on both sides to the Hawaiian Islands on the west, and England, Norway, Sweden and India on the east…. We rejoice to hear that Pentecost has fallen in Calcutta, India…. We have letters from China, Germany, Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, England, Ireland, Australia and other countries from hungry souls that want their Pentecost…. In Stockholm, Sweden … the first soul came through tonight, receiving the baptism with the Holy Ghost with Bible evidence…. In Christiana, Norway—God is wonderfully demonstrating His power.’ In this way the Azusa Street Revival, rippling out across the globe, continued for about three years.”

From this passage, we have seen how that putting on the new man is something we must choose to do. It does not happen apart from our desire for it to happen. So, what does the new man or the new woman look like? How does he or she act in day-to-day living? In this passage, Paul elaborates on actions that believers should and should not be engaged in.

First, is lying. “Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” A lie is a statement contrary to that which one knows to be true, or a statement intended to deceive others. The devil is the father of lies. He operates on a platform of deceit. Even today, he has placed millions in spiritual darkness because of the lies that he has told. When we who are saved tell a lie, we are doing the work of the devil.

Notice how the text says, “Putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.” Paul emphasizes the closeness of the relationship between those in the church. We are neighbours, members one of another, family. We ought not to lie to anybody, but especially to those in our own families — both our physical family and our spiritual family. When you lie to someone you are building up an artificial image of yourself. The other person cannot have a real relationship with you because they are interacting, not with the real you, but with a figment, an imaginary creation that you have made up. You destroy trust

God’s people ought to operate on a basis of truth. That means being honest about all things — even little things. First John 2:21 says, “Ye know that no lie is of the truth.” Even the lies we tell to so-called protect somebody. Such lies may seem harmless for a time, but eventually you will find out that it would have been better to tell the truth.

The old man was content to live according to the falsehoods that he was fed by the devil. But the new man lives in the light of the truth , and it is his duty to communicate in truth to others.

The words of Ruth Gardner should also be the words of every Christian:

I believe in being honest;
I believe in being true,
That honesty should start with me
In all I say, in all I do.

I’ll form good habits in my youth,
To keep my word, to tell the truth,
To speak up in defending right
And keep my name and honor bright.

I believe in being honest;
I believe in being true,
That honesty should start with me
In all I say, in all I do.

Let’s pray.

Now, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, please keep in mind that the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Just pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. I will be sharing more on the matter of salvation in the next segment of our service which starts in about 5 minutes.
