Jesus Christ said, “It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer.”

How Not to Walk, Part 7 (Revive the Family, Revive the Church, Awaken the Nation, O Lord #253)

A series of homilies on Ephesians.

A homily is “a short talk on a religious or moral topic; a usually short sermon; a lecture or discourse on or of a biblical theme.”

I am sharing a verse-by-verse series of short messages on Ephesians (as well as other passages of Scripture) specifically targeted at reviving families and encouraging and exhorting husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and children to do what God has commanded them to do, for if the church is to be revived and the country is to be awakened, the family must be revived first.

TEXT: Ephesians 4:22-24:

22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

William W. Patton said, “No system of doctrine, preaching, or worship which fails to develop prayer, faith, spiritual labor, and success in converting souls from sin, can long have the face to claim to be the religion of Jesus Christ!”

Leonard Ravenhill said, God didn’t come to be a shareholder. He doesn’t want to share your life, He wants to own it. He doesn’t want partnership. He wants ownership of every part of your being.”

In their book, The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever, Elmer Towns and Douglas Porter share with us: “The spread of the Pentecostal message to South Africa also grew out of the Azusa Street Revival. John G. Lake visited the Azusa Street Mission prior to taking the Pentecostal message to South Africa in 1908. Within five years he’d established 500 black and 125 white Pentecostal churches in that nation. Others took the Pentecostal message to Europe and Asia.”

One of the laws of physics is that nature abhors a vacuum. Nothing that is truly empty will remain empty for long because the matter surrounding it will move to fill it. From this passage, we have talked about the Christian’s responsibility to put off the old man of sin and darkness. However, it is not enough to simply put off the old man; one must replace that which is removed with something else. Thus, Paul says, “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Many people find themselves fixated on the negative of getting rid of that which is evil, but they never look to the positive of gaining that which is good. You have heard it said that an idle mind is the devil’s playground. It is not enough to empty your mind in order to get rid of that which is evil, because the devil will come along and fill your mind with something. Instead, you must actively fill your mind — be renewed in the spirit of your mind — with that which is good.

You can choose to put on the new man by filling your mind with the truths of the Word of God and living by those truths. Dr. Warren Wiersbe said, “The Word of God renews the mind as we surrender our all to Him. Jesus prayed, ‘Sanctify them through thy truth; thy word is truth.’ As the mind understands the truth of God’s Word, it is gradually transformed by the Spirit, and this renewal leads to a changed life. Physically, you are what you eat, but spiritually, you are what you think. ‘As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.'”

Begin today to choose to put on the new man and to renew your mind by filling it with the Word of God and living thereby.

David Ingles wrote:

Hallelujah, He redeemed me
I am born again to win
I thank God He justified me
And cleansed me from my sin

I’m a new creation
I’m a brand new man
Old things are passed away

I am born again
More than a conqueror
That’s who I am today.

Let’s pray.

Now, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, please keep in mind that the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Just pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. I will be sharing more on the matter of salvation in the next segment of our service which starts in about 5 minutes.
