TEXT: Matthew 10:24-33

24 The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

25 It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?

26 Fear them not therefore: for there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; and hid, that shall not be known.

27 What I tell you in darkness, that speak ye in light: and what ye hear in the ear, that preach ye upon the housetops.

28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

29 Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father.

30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

31 Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.

32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven.

33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

———-

Paul Chappell said, “Fear of man is the enemy of the fear of the Lord. The fear of man pushes us to perform for man’s approval rather than according to God’s directives.”

In our last message we looked at how we should expect to face persecution in this world, knowing that Jesus also faced extreme opposition from the people He came to save. Since we are the servants and disciples of Christ, we should not expect any better treatment than what He received. Instead, we should expect and be ready for persecution when it comes, while continuing to do what He has called us to do.

Now Jesus gives us reasons why we should remain steadfast in persecution without fearing those who are attacking us.

First of all, we should not fear them because “there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed.” Warren Wiersbe said of this passage, “The enemies of Christ use secret and deceptive means to oppose the Gospel. But true believers are open and courageous in their lives and witness. We have nothing to hide. False witnesses lied about Jesus during His trial, but God saw to it that the truth came out. We have nothing to fear because the Lord will one day reveal the secrets of men’s hearts and expose them and judge them. Our task is not to please men, but to proclaim God’s message.” Just as Jesus has been vindicated in history so that millions of people remember Him as a wise teacher and believe in Him as Saviour rather than know him only as a criminal executed by the Roman empire, even though persecuted Christians may be seens as criminals now, they will be known as faithful and true by God in eternity.

Second of all, we should not fear them because even though they can kill the body, they cannot kill the soul. The only thing that persecutors have to leverage against Christians is pain in this world, but we have an eternity of peace to look forward to. Warren Wiersbe said, “The present judgment of men does not frighten us, because we are living in the light of the future judgment of God. We fear God alone. All that men can do is kill the body; and, if they do, the believer’s soul goes home to be with the Lord. But God is able to destroy both body and soul in hell! Of course, God will never condemn one of His own children. Martin Luther caught this truth when he wrote: Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they may kill: God’s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever. The person who fears God alone need never fear any man or group of men. The fear of God is the fear that cancels fear.”

God is the only Being who has power over the state of the soul after death. The Bible teaches that us that God will bring those who have trusted Christ as Saviour, while the souls of those who rejected Him will be cast into hell. That is the only way as soul can die — by being cut off from the creator God and His love. Furthermore, the Bible tells us that those who endured persecution and faithfully preached the Gospel and advanced the kingdom of Heaven on earth will be the beneficiaries of special blessings in the new Heaven and new Earth. If we are concerned primarily about our souls, which will last for all eternity, over our bodies, which will rot into nothing, we will fear God rather than man. In the words of Matthew Henry, “Let Christ’s ministers faithfully reveal his truths, and then leave it to him, in due time, to reveal their integrity.”

Henry Francis Lyte wrote:

Jesus, I my cross have taken,
all to leave and follow thee;
destitute, despised, forsaken,
thou from hence my all shalt be.
Perish ev’ry fond ambition,
all I’ve sought or hoped or known;
yet how rich is my condition,
God and heav’n are still my own.

Let the world despise and leave me,
they have left my Savior too;
human hearts and looks deceive me;
thou art not, like man, untrue;
and, while thou shalt smile upon me,
God of wisdom, love, and might,
foes may hate and friends may shun me;
show thy face, and all is bright.

Hasten on from grace to glory,
armed by faith and winged by prayer;
heaven’s eternal days before thee,
God’s own hand shall guide thee there.
Soon shall close thy earthly mission,
swift shall pass thy pilgrim days;
hope soon change to glad fruition,
faith to sight, and prayer to praise.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
