TEXT: John 11:41-44

41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Today, I am continuing the daily Just Jesus Evangelistic Campaign sermon series, which is aimed at sharing the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with unbelievers and reminding Christians, in this important election year, to keep the main thing the main thing — and that is reaching unbelievers with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and praying for their salvation, for the problem in America is not only disobedient presidents, politicians, and people, but disobedient pastors, preachers, and parishioners who have refused to obey the Lord’s Great Commission which is to, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” and who have refused to obey God’s repeated commands to “pray without ceasing” for unbelievers, believers, and political leaders. Yes, you should pray for the right candidate to win; yes, you should vote for the candidate that the Lord gives you peace about voting for. But, don’t get caught up in it like the world does. Nothing much is going to change until people get saved and get their hearts right with the Lord.

This campaign is inspired by the following three verses: 1 Corinthians 2:2 which says, “For I determined not to know anything among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.” Acts 5:42 which says, “And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.” And 2 Timothy 2:4 which says, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.”

This series is not for Christians necessarily. However, I do hope you are one of those saints who still loves to hear the “Old, old story of Jesus and His love” — As another hymn says, “For those who know it best Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest.” This series is primarily for unbelievers, so they can hear and understand the Gospel and be saved from sin and the punishment of sin which is hell. This is message number 168.

John Piper said, “This is the glory of Jesus. Jesus raised Lazarus because he is the resurrection. He is the arrival in history of God’s final, glorious renovation of all things, including our bodies. Believers, you will be raised from the dead and shine like the sun in the kingdom of your Father. Lazarus is a preview of your resurrection. Jesus is coming back to this earth in power and great glory. And this event, and this story, and this sermon is a window into that glory.”

After clearly stating the purpose of the miracle in His prayer, Jesus called Lazarus forth from the grave. “When he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.” Jesus commanded Lazarus to rise with a tone of authority. He spoke truly as the Master of Life and Death. It was no strain or difficulty to Him. Jesus called Lazarus forth from the grave just as easily as you or I might call a pet dog to come to us.

“Lazarus, come forth!” The power of the miracle was not in any ritual, incantation, or spell. The power was in the words and person of Jesus Christ. This is the very same voice that said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. This is the very same voice that had called the sun, moon, and stars into existence. This is the very same voice that commanded sea life to spring forth in the oceans and animal life to spring forth upon the earth. To call a man from death back to life was nothing to Jesus.

The Bible says, “And he that was dead came forth…” There was no question that Lazarus was dead; yet, when Jesus called, he reacted. He walked out of the grave. (He may have shuffled due to the fact that he was bound in his graveclothes, but he was clearly alive.) This tells us that the dead do not cease to exist after death. They go somewhere, and God knows where they are. Jesus did not remake Lazarus before calling him out of the tomb; He simply commanded him to come from the place where he was, take up his old body, and return to life.

You can imagine the shocked expressions on the faces of Mary, Martha, and the rest of the Jews as the mummy Lazarus walked out of his tomb. It was almost too hard to believe. But, Jesus was keen to make sure they had no doubts about what had just happened. Just as He involved the people in removing the stone from the tomb, He involved them again in getting Lazarus back to a normal state of operation. He told the people, “Loose him and let him go.” The crowd had to go touch and handle Lazarus which would leave no doubt that he was truly alive. This is similar to what Jesus allowed people to do to Him when He was resurrected. He let people touch His hands, His feet, and the wound in His side so that they would have no doubts that it was truly Him.

Lazarus’ resurrection was a miracle in the making for four days. Jesus had allowed things, and even orchestrated things, to work out the way they did for maximum impact. No stone was left unturned in this display of the might of the Son of God.

Jesus’ resurrection of Lazarus is just a case study in the great resurrection that God has planned for all those who believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior. One day, Jesus will resurrect the bodies of those who believe in Him so that they can live with Him, in full physical form, enjoying all the blessings of Heaven, forever. You can have a part in that great resurrection if you believe on Jesus Christ as your Savior today. Here is how:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
