TEXT: Matthew 6:25-34

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

In this series, we have been looking at how we can seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness in a practical way. The word “seek” implies that we ought to pursue the kingdom of God through thinking about the things of God, meditating on the things of God, and reasoning through the Word of God by regular, systematic Bible study. The fourth implication of the word seek is “enquiry.”

What does it mean to seek the kingdom of God through enquiry? The Oxford English Dictionary defines “enquiry” as: an act of asking for information; an official investigation. What American law enforcement officials call an “investigation,” British legal authorities call an “enquiry.” An enquiry is not just about asking questions; it is about seeking truth and acting on that truth. An enquiry goes beyond reasoning or study because it involves not just the mind, but the body. As we seek first the kingdom of God, we must act on what we already know about the kingdom.

In Scripture, we have an example of enquiry in the wise men who came from the east, following the star, seeking the King of the Jews. The Gospels reveal that these wise men had learned of the coming King from their studies of the Prophet Isaiah. They knew this Old Testament scripture. However, it was not enough to study the words of Isaiah. They acted on what they knew and extended their investigation or enquiry by packing up their camels and going on a long journey to seek and find out about the kingdom of God.

Jesus also told a parable about a man who shows us what it means to conduct an enquiry as part of our seeking first the kingdom of God. In Matthew 13, Jesus said, “The kingdom of heaven is like a merchant seeking beautiful pearls, who, when he had found one pearl of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it.” It wasn’t enough for this merchant to read about the pearl of great price in National Geographic. It wasn’t enough for him to go to Robbins Brothers and gaze at the pearl from behind the glass. No. He sold all that he had to obtain the pearl of great price.

How will you enquire after the kingdom of God? It can be as simple as obeying the Scriptures that you have thought about, meditated on, and studied. Seeking the kingdom of God is loving your family, loving your neighbor, loving your community, and treating everyone as you want to be treated. Seeking the kingdom of God may mean selling off your extravagant material possessions, downsizing, and using your extra time and resources to plant a church, or build a mission for the homeless, or care for orphans, or move to another country and preach the Gospel. We only fully seek the kingdom of God when we begin living as kingdom citizens in this world.

A Swedish hymn beautifully expresses what should be our attitude:

O that pearl of great price! have you found it?
Is the Savior supreme in your love?
O consider it well, ere you answer,
As you hope for a welcome above.

Have you given up all for this treasure?
Have you counted past gains as but loss?
Has your trust in yourself and your merits
Come to naught before Christ and His cross?

Has the Savior, the righteous, the holy,
Cast the beams of His all searching light
Into all of your heart’s deep recesses,
And transformed into day their dark night?

O then answer these questions so pressing,
Before God, ere time’s favor shall cease,
Is the pearl of great price yours forever?
Have you Jesus, and in Him your peace?

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
