TEXT: Matthew 6:25-34

25 Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?

26 Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?

27 Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?

28 And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:

29 And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?

32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.

33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Dwight Pentecost said, “You cannot serve the wrong master and experience the peace of God in your life. When you pursue the righteousness of Christ, and trust Him to work out His perfect will in you, you are delivered from slavery to things and from worry over them. May God give us such a confidence in Him that we will trust Him and not worry.”

So far in this series, we have learned four ways by which we can seek first the kingdom of God: we can pursue the kingdom of God through thinking about the things of God, meditating on the things of God, reasoning through the Word of God by regular, systematic Bible study, and, finally, through enquiry, or acting on the truth that we have learned about the kingdom of God. But, if we are to live in the confidence that God will take care of us, we must not only seek the kingdom of God, but we must also seek His righteousness.

What does this mean? The first thing to notice about this command is that it is NOT to seek righteousness, but rather it is to seek GOD’S righteousness. Most people, to some degree, seek righteousness, specifically their own righteousness. They try to do good and treat everybody right. However, as Scripture informs us, in God’s sight, “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags.” Thus the command to seek God’s righteousness, not our own.

How is God’s righteousness defined? The Greek word translated as righteousness means: being proper or right in the sense of being fully justified or being in accordance with what God requires. It is the quality of being upright. The word conveys the idea of conformity to a standard. In this sense, righteousness is the opposite of sin which is defined as missing the mark set by God.

Pursuing God’s righteousness means yearning and striving and earnestly desiring to please God in all things. Pleasing man means little because men’s standards are not on par with God’s. Pursuing God’s righteousness means being committed to sanctification and holy living. It means obeying the still small voice that tells us to do hard, uncomfortable things. It means being as near to God as possible in every way. If we are to be successful in this quest of pursuing the kingdom of God and His righteousness, we must sincerely and desperately desire it. If you don’t have that desire, pray that God would give it to you.

Ray Pritchard said, “If you want righteousness, you can have it. Let me go out on a limb and make a bold statement. Whatever you want in the spiritual realm, you can have if you want it badly enough. I don’t think we appreciate the importance of that truth. Most of us are about as close to God now as we want to be. We have about as much joy as we want, about as much peace as we want. If you were hungry for something better from God, you could have it.” The question for us is: How badly do we want God’s righteousness? How badly do we want to be free from worry and anxiety? How badly do we want to walk each day living in the kingdom.

H.G. Bosch wrote:

I walked life’s path with worry,
Disturbed and quite unblest,
Until I trusted Jesus;
Now faith has given rest.

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour!
