The Gifts God has Given to His Church, Part 17 (Revive the Family, Revive the Church, Awaken the Nation, O Lord #241)

A series of homilies on Ephesians.

A homily is “a short talk on a religious or moral topic; a usually short sermon; a lecture or discourse on or of a biblical theme.”

I am sharing a verse-by-verse series of short messages on Ephesians (as well as other passages of Scripture) specifically targeted at reviving families and encouraging and exhorting husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, and children to do what God has commanded them to do, for if the church is to be revived and the country is to be awakened, the family must be revived first.

TEXT: Ephesians 4:12-14:

12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

David Smithers said, “Hell is larger today than it was yesterday, because many of us have failed to pray.”

Leonard Ravenhill said, “The wonder of the grace of God is that God can take an unholy man out of an unholy world and make that man holy and put him back into an unholy world and keep him holy!”

In their book, The Ten Greatest Revivals Ever, Elmer Towns and Douglas Porter share with us: “William J. Seymour preached an apocalyptic message, assuring his listeners the end of the world was at hand. It was his view that Jesus was coming very soon to judge the world and establish his kingdom on earth. Prior to that coming, there would be a ‘latter rain’ outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The evidence that the Spirit had indeed come would be ‘speaking in tongues.’ Everything seemed to be happening just as Seymour had said.”

In our passage today, Paul continues with the theme of the outcome of the use of spiritual gifts in the church. The outcome he talks about in verse 13 is the stability of believers. He says, “That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive.”

There were false teachers in Paul’s day who tried to lead believers astray, and there are false teachers in our day who try to do the same. However, the spiritual gifts that God has given to the church, if they are utilized properly, will help prevent God’s people from being led astray.

Dr. Warren Wiersbe said, “The maturing Christian is not tossed about by every religious novelty that comes along. There are religious quacks waiting to kidnap God’s children and get them into their false cults, but the maturing believer recognizes false doctrine and stays clear of it… These false teachers try to capture immature Christians, and for this reason, most of the membership of the false cults comes from local churches, particularly churches ‘that do not feed their people the Word of God.”

The church is faced with an abundance of false doctrine and people twisting the Scriptures to support their own agendas. Several Christian denominations are currently struggling with how they will address homosexuality. They are being tossed to and fro by winds of false doctrine that have led some churches to accept homosexual clergy in the church. Many Christians are being swayed by the false doctrine of the prosperity gospel. Some are being swayed by politicians trying to buy the support of God’s people.

The solution to this problem in the church is found in the faithful reading, studying, and teaching of the Word of God. When preachers preach God’s Word as it is written, the people are equipped to identify that which is not in line with God’s Word. On top of that, every individual believer is responsible for reading and studying the Word of God and asking God to speak to him or her through the Holy Spirit. Just as bank workers are trained to recognize counterfeit money by handling real money, Christians must also be so familiar with God’s Word that they recognize false teaching easily and are able to stand strong against it, holding up the truth and the blood-stained banner.

Martin Luther wrote:

Though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God hath willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The Prince of Darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo, his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.

Let’s pray.

Now, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, please keep in mind that the Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” Just pray and ask Him to come into your heart and He will. I will be sharing more on the matter of salvation in the next segment of our service which starts in about 5 minutes.
